La Jolla Elementary School

La Jolla Elementary School is an old fashioned community school located in the heart of La Jolla. The school has 435 students in grades K-5, an expert and dedicated staff of caring professionals, active and involved parents and a supportive community. Approximately 60 students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are the gifted and talented seminar classes (GATE program). La Jolla Elementary is part of the San Diego Unified School District.

Founded in the 1940s, the school has undergone recent improvements to all of the classroom buildings, auditorium and offices. The buildings have been painted inside and out and have new ceilings and new flooring. Three playgrounds (kindergarten, primary and upper grade) have new playground equipment and the upper field and lunch arbor have new shade structures. The grass field was completely refurbished in the summer of 2002. This year they are planning to construct a new 2,000 square foot library building.

The literacy framework is a balanced approach for teaching children how to develop their literacy skills. Components of the framework include opportunities for students to listen and reflect on wonderful literature, read books at their instructional level with teacher guidance, choose and read appropriate literature independently, share and engage in meaningful dialogue about what they read and develop their writing skills. It is hoped that they will become avid readers and writers and lifelong learners. A three-hour block of time each school day is devoted to studying language arts.

Two years ago, La Jolla Elementary School began implementing the Everyday Mathematics program, written at the University of Chicago. Each grade level is engaged in six-week units of study in earth science, physical science and life science. All classrooms have Internet access capability and have multimedia computers.

La Jolla Elementary School parents contribute greatly to the school. They volunteer in classrooms, work behind the scenes to support teachers, and work to provide fun and enriching activities for our students. The PTA provides cultural enrichment through a monthly series of "First Friday" assemblies. These dedicated parent groups (PTA and Friends of La Jolla Elementary, Inc.) are continuously fund raising to both support the daily instructional needs of our students and to improve our physical facilities.

All in all it’s a very good public school. We have a two other public elementary school in La Jolla in the the Bird Rock and Torrey Pines area – see Bird Rock Elementary and Torrey Pines Elementary.
