La Jolla Bird Rock Elementary School
Bird Rock Elementary School, located in the Bird Rock area of La Jolla, has an enrollment of approximately 550 students. Neighborhood residents, as well as parents, feel a strong sense of connection to the school. Stability pervades with many second-generation students no attending. The low student mobility rate provides a consistent environment.
Bird Rock is over 50 years old and is situated on four and a half acres, with an additional half-acre access to an adjacent park. There are four permanent buildings and eleven bungalows. All buildings have been renovated within the last three years. The school is completely surrounded by fencing to ensure a protected environment. A new library and instructional area are just being completed.
Bird Rock students are high achieving. Their "SAT 9" scores consistently place Bird Rock in the top five schools in the San Diego City School District. Teacher encouragement and parental dedication to education account for this success. In addition, they have very few disciplinary problems. An extended day reading program is available and tutoring is given through the “6 to 6” program, which is open before school at 7am and after school until 6pm.
The school has been a real magnet for young families who are moving into this area. Bird Rock School is operating at maximum capacity … and truthfully is a bit crowded. But, it’s crowded because it’s such a good school. A detailed report showing all test scores and academic data for all the La Jolla public schools is available on request.
We lived in the area around this fine school for 20 years and two of our children attended Bird Rock Elementary. The Bird Rock and Upper Hermosa areas are very desirable, especially for young families. We know these neighborhoods very well from having raised our family there.
